First: Genealogy studies are useful, interesting and exciting. Is it the study of your own family («Grandma, do you remember your grandma’s birth place? I should know!») Or that can be the biography of Great Poet’s grandchildren (irrespectively of who the «Great Poet» was). Or that might be some less-known Civil War hero’s life. Collecting the data, names, dates, and cities, organizing them and discovering some forgotten links and relationships is a «good job».
Second: The majority of modern genealogy software is quite boring and is poorly visualized, it’s rather about «collecting» than about «organizing» and «visualizing». Fortunately, there are lucky exceptions from the above trend — just look at GenealogMap.
The GenealogMap software is organized around idea of three-dimensional «map» instead of common and not-so-useful «tree». Besides lines, plain and too boring, GenealogMap also uses the «height level» for representing information (the larger is the level, the closer the object is «to the first plane»). Great drawings successfully support the good metaphor — the large picture of genealogical map looks completely like a piece of art.
Besides the cool visualization method, the software provides some other interesting goodies. It allows adding not only persons, but also places (for example, birth or wedding places) and other facts on a map.
