Many years have passed since computers were invented as tools for scientific research and engineering tasks. The lucky invention has been widely accepted; it has changed our world and the course of progress completely. Now computers play the role of rather an «everyday tech», «personal communicator» or «stationery» than a serious engineering tool. Sometimes, we don’t even remember that today’s computers are STILL good tools for engineering and scientific research.
Fortunately, there are good software authors who make today’s regular desktop computer usable for today’s engineer. Here is the a very good example: OscilloMeter signal metrics software. OscilloMeter is addressed for the real-time plotting and researching signals received from an Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC).
The input is very scalable: any external ADC can be supported, as well as the ordinary computer sound card. The received signal is plotted through the familiar oscilloscope chart with different modes (especially useful for dual-channel ADC, allowing to plot sums, differences and other combinations of both signals). The second main function (besides oscilloscope) is spectrum analyzer, based on Fast Fourier transform (FFT).
