The analysis of other programs’ functionality is a usual activity of the majority of programmers. In most cases, such analysis ought to be done without program source codes (sometimes even without any documentation). The reasons may vary. For example, you may need to know why (on which action) program fails; or what resources it tries to use (and possibly can’t); or just «how this effect was achieved». The most common method of the analysis is API (Application Programming Interface) calling the monitoring, in other words — «spying», which functions from exported from which DLLs the program calls, which parameters it gets, and which results it retrieves.
