There are numerous methods for studying foreign languages in general and for studying foreign words in particular. But (fortunately or unfortunately) still no word learning method exists that is more efficient than the simple «see word — try to translate».
WordQuiz is an outstanding example of software embodying the old world learning idea. WordQuiz allows you to work with any dictionary in any language(s), either printed on paper or imported from a data file of a common format. In fact, you can «teach yourself» on any set of «question-answer» pairs. WordQuiz offers easy-to-use, full-featured interface for editing and managing word sets.
The main part of software is, of course, the actual training process. WordQuiz has several modes that differ by the order and directions of the questions, as well as by their «shape». The «shape» forms are: the classical flashcards (with only «faith» answers of «I know»/«I don’t know»), test (multiple-choice), and plain question (you must type in the answer). While going through the training, you will see the detailed statistic on your overall success (total number of questions, total number of answers, and the number right/wrong answers). The interface of the quiz is simple enough to not be distracting and colorful enough to not appear dismal.
