TheSages English Dictionary and Thesaurus (or just TheSage for short) is a good demonstration of how slick and innovative user interface can contain a full and complicated reference and still preserve the ease-of-use and strength of an information reference.
At first glance, TheSage is «just» a dictionary. You enter a word, the exact meaning of which you want to know, then press Enter and obtain the words card. However, upon the closer look, the smart organization of the card lets you receive the information of just the level you need. By default, TheSage shows three levels of information: the word itself, speech roles the word can play, and a set of definitions relative to each role (speech part). There are also usage examples and thesauri (derived words, synonyms, usage context and so on), which are initially collapsed but can be shown either for a specific definition or for any of upper levels (for this speech part, for the word in all of its meanings). It is fully customizable what is to be shown for each word.
TheSage also has «fuzzy search» features like wildcard-enabled dictionary search and «all anagrams for the word» search. Each of this lookups can be started by special buttons or by special service characters followed by the request.
Additionally, TheSage integrates well into Windows system, so it can be requested by a hotkey from virtually any program.
