Disk fragmentation is a typical example of a Problem You Possibly Don’t Know of but Still Clash With. On your computer’s disk, file system data is stored in small blocks of an arbitrary size. When the disk is almost new and empty, those blocks of each file are stored sequentially, one after another, and are read fast. But after the computer has been used for a long while, your disk’s block-level is a mess. To read some not-so-huge file, Windows needs to collect blocks from many often distant locations on the disk, and that makes it definitely slow. The solution is DE-fragmentation. Typically it looks like you run a separate «defrag program», which crackles your HDD during 3-4 hours (you can’t effectively use your computer during those hours) and when you think it’s finally over, it says: «now all is OK, but please run me next time as soon as possible».
Yuck!
