In any organization with a dedicated IT department, one day this department’s workers get stuck with inventory management problem. It mainly means knowing which hardware and software parts are currently in which computer in the organization. Knowing this is very helpful in many of IT departments’ tasks, like maintenance, software and hardware updates, security checks and so on. A good computer inventory solution should, presumably, consist of a tool for gathering information from the organization’s computers and a tool for managing that information (database). zCI is a really good solution in the light of these terms.
zCI’s inventory is web-based; it is open-source and works with MySQL, PHP and Java. Information-gathering «clients» are small programs targeting both Windows and Linux (JavaScript for Windows and Java for Linux), which can be run on any box in a single click and gather all possible information.
The administrative part of the system allows not only to review gathered information, but also to manage it in a wide range of ways. IT stuff can set up and change computer names and owners, manage devices’ statuses (to «end of lease», for example) and perform any complex queries on data stored in database.
