Despite the new cool competing technologies, simple GIF file animation is still widely used, especially in the web. There are many reasons to prefer GIF-based «movies» — they are lightweight, supported by a wide range of browsers, they don’t require any plugins or browser additions and advanced users can work with them just like with other «normal» images.
