This utility can seem «just a small helper», but detailed analysis can say you it is really smart and really helpful (I’ll even say indispensable) for almost any database programmer. Its functionality can be easily guessed by name: it just formats PL/SQL code (as well as plain good SQL), and the way he does it can be characterized as «just right».
OK, then WHAT is right about Tidycode Pl/Sql Formatter? First, TPSF is command-line tool, and this fact makes a huge sense: you can easily integrate it into your favorite IDE or editor, as most of programmer’s editor can call custom command-lines for current file. Then, look at the formatting options: there are myriad of them. You can apply reasonable defaults, or thoroughly select your preferred alignments, identifiers and keywords case, whitespace saving and so on. The next trick: for selecting your own options set you shouldn’t read documentation dozen times and call commands: the package includes Experimenter GUI, where you can just set/unset checkboxes, preview the formatting example and copy resulting command line. This way, you’ll perform only three rather simple tasks: download TPSF, research with Experimenter to achieve desired options set, and setup the command for your editor. After it, your SQL or PL/SQL code of any complexity can be beautified in a click.
