Although modern digital photography has reached an amazing level of advancement and keeps surprising us every now and then when new products or concepts are presented, it is still based on the same optical principles as conventional film photography. Affordable mainstream point-and-shoot cameras and even professional SLR cameras without appropriate lenses suffer from common problems, one of the major ones being the distortion of vertical lines, especially in shots of buildings or trees. Although our mind perceives them as perfectly vertical objects, the shape of the camera lens skews the perspective and makes the shots look unnatural. This problem can be solved using specialized shift lenses, but they are expensive and are not intended for the mainstream market. If you want your photos to look professional, but you dont have a fortune to spend on pro-level equipment, ShiftN is your weapon of choice!
ShiftN is an intelligent tool capable of analyzing photos and fixing the line distortion (line convergence) effect automatically or with minimal users input. The software analyzes the source image, detects vertical lines and performs the correction, making lines run parallel to each other. Apart from the automatic mode, ShiftN gives the user plenty of opportunities to contribute to the image correction process by fine-tuning its parameters. A number of parameters can be adjusted manually to reach the optimal effect: minimum line length, minimum line contrast, maximum tangential deviation, amount of correction, radial distortion and others. Corrected images can be automatically trimmed to eliminate white areas resulting from perspective correction or the user can manually crop the image to preserve the important parts of the photo that are getting cut out in the automatic mode. Any changes to the photo can be instantly undone by pressing a corresponding button on the programs toolbar, so you dont have to worry about making a wrong move. Supporting command line processing and three output file formats (JPG, BMP and TIFF), ShiftN can become an extremely valuable asset for photographers making lots of architectural shots that need bulk corrections.
ShiftN is a totally free, intuitive and easy to use tool that will efficiently fix visual distortions on your photos and will make you look at them from a new perspective!
